Fttx fiber and copperled cabling are both common data transmission media with good anti-interference and confidentiality, but there are fundamental differences between the them:
1) Transmission distance
The transmission distance of fttx fiber is much further than that of copperled cabling, generally. The transmission distance of copperled cabling is about 100m, and the maximum distance exceeds no more than 300m, while the maximum transmission distance of fttx fiber can reach 100km (such as single-mode fiber).
2) Transmission rate
The transmission rate of fttx fiber is also much higher than that of copperled cabling, at present, the maximum transmission rate of copperled cabling is 40Gbps (category 8 network cable or DAC passive copper cable); However, the maximum transmission rate of fttx fiber can reach 100Gbps.
3) Maintenance management
The procedures such as making the crystal head of the copperled cabling and connecting the equipment port are very simple. However, the operations such as cutting and welding as well as connecting equipment of fttx fiber are relatively complicated and require higher operations.
4) Cost
With same length, the price of fttx fiber is not more expensive but rather cheaper than that of copperled cabling, but the price of fttx fiber connection equipment and construction is much higher than that of copperled cabling, therefore, from the perspective of project cost, the cost of fttx fiber is much higher than that of copperled cabling.
Although with increasing demand for bandwidth, fttx fiber has gradually taken greater share in data center deployment with its advantages of high transmission rate, efficiency, and wider bandwidth, especially in some backbone application networks.
However, copperled cabling will still be an indispensable part of data centers, especially in some special environmental applications, copperled cabling cannot be completely replaced by fttx fiber.
